The little kids who grew up listening to Davie Bowie are old enough to write TV shows now
♥♥♥Doctor Who♥♥♥
I kept expecting the Master to show up and be like “Hey baby. It took you long enough!”
Also, I managed to scare the hell out of myself while washing dishes afterwards. “Oh my god the water is touching me!”
Hee. But seriously. Wasn’t that fantastic?

Yes! I thought of you when I realized that it was called Bowie Station. :) Your dish washing story amuses me greatly.
This was an excellent episode! There was lots of great acting, and they nailed the creepiness. I am getting a little worn down by the consistent darkness of just about everything that has come from DW and Torchwood ever since late S4. Oh well. We’re surely in for more of the same for The End of Time.
By the way, are you by any chance thinking of going to Gallifrey One this year? I know you’ve been moving away from tv fandom a bit, but this con should be good group therapy for dealing with Tennant’s departure. :)

This episode was pretty unrelentingly dark, but the one before it was more happy-go-lucky. I agree, though, the overall tone of the show has gotten significantly darker. This seems to happen a lot–the same is true of Buffy and Farscape. I assume it’s a result of the writers trying to find ways to up the ante and push the characters farther than they’ve gone before. I did really like that they didn’t just push the Doctor into more big-sad-eyed-depression, though, but actually had him try to do something about it (even if what he did was snap and go megalomaniacal!).
I would really love to see you again, but I just don’t think Gallifrey One is going to happen for me again. I’m feeling so disconnected from convention fandom–I just don’t think it’s right for me anymore. I hope you have a wonderful time, though!

You’re right that Planet of the Dead was comparatively cheerful. I just tend to gloss over it because it wasn’t very good, IMHO. :) We haven’t seen anything that was both upbeat and good since the Unicorn and the Wasp. The trend to push the characters by darkening the show is understandable, and to a certain extent I even like it. However, I do prefer it when the writers drag the characters through hell and out again rather than just leaving them in there to rot. I suppose I need to wait for the End of Time special before I can render judgment.
I agree that going from sad puppy eyes in the rain to crazed self-righteousness is a welcome change. In a way I’m glad to see the Doctor so clearly crossing a line. There have been several times when his attitude or behavior has been fairly disturbing to me in terms of his tendency to take decisions away from others, self-righteousness, and hubris. It’s refreshing to see that the writers are finally following through on the exploration of his scarier character flaws rather than glossing over them.
I figured you probably weren’t coming to Gallifrey, but I thought I’d double check. Thanks for letting me know. Feeling disconnected is certainly a valid reason to avoid flying across the country! Still, if we’re ever in the same city we should hang out.
