[Torchwood Spoilers]
I haven’t seen it yet, but I read the spoilers, and…
Wankstravaganza time!
*grabs popcorn*
Seriously, the wank over this is going to be epic.
PS: Sorry if you really liked Ianto, but come on. You clicked the cut; you should know by now not to expect anything nice about Torchwood in this journal.

hahahahahahaha. Oh man, I kind of disliked Ianto, so I’m not at all upset about this. But I am loooooooving the fandom anger. I love it when fandom gets its panties in a twist.

So far what I’ve seen has been exactly like what happened after Tara’s death on BtVS. My most vivid memories of that are of the header image of the Kitten board being photos of the writers and showrunners with red Xs over their faces, and of Adam Busch being interrogated at a convention Q&A about why he didn’t quit in protest rather than play the character who killed Tara. (Extra-delicious irony: the fact that Adam and Amber are still dating!)
I do have bits of sympathy with the upset fans (it sucks that gay characters keep ending up dead) but mostly amusement at people taking television WAY TOO DAMN SERIOUSLY, to the detriment of actual real life human beings. The writers are not trying to hurt their fans, they’re just trying to tell a good story–and a good story is not one where nothing changes and everyone is always happy!

I 100% agree that it sucks to have another gay character killed off… but at the same time I have a feeling there wouldn’t the same outpouring of anger if it were Owen or Gwen who was the gay character who was killed. I think a lot of people who are so upset over the death of a character are really upset because it was ~*~Ianto~*~ the fandom darling who died. I got bitched at on another journal because I made a bemused comment and someone was like “this is not the time or place”… which… LOL. This is a fictional character. He was NOT REAL. I understand being a bit disappointed when a favorite character dies, but actual like SADNESS? No. It’s imaginary.

LOL, yes, this wank is extra delicious because it’s precious, precious ~*~Ianto~*~. >:)
I do understand the sadness, but I don’t get people taking it so seriously. None of us would be here in fandom if fiction didn’t affect our emotions, but it’s important to recognize the boundary between fiction and reality. No one in the real world is obligated to respect your sadness over something fictional, and it’s never justified to hurt someone in the real world because you’re upset about fiction.
(I took a glimpse at comments people were sending to James Moran on Twitter and DUDE, not cool.)

They have to go pretty far to kill a character on Torchwood who isn’t flexible, at least. It’d mean killing Rhys.

I was thinking that–does Rhys count as a main character? He’s not a Torchwood member–he’s really just an appendage to Gwen–so I’d say not.

LOL. Whoooops. I totally just accidentally made a new reply instead of replying to your comment. I’m definitely on top of things today.

No problem; people do that all the time.

This series has been quite good, especially compared to the previous seasons. As far as Ianto goes, I’m not going to assume he’s dead until he’s still dead at the end of the next episode. But even if he is, that would mean the show has killed two-thirds of its straight team members and half of the gay ones. That’s mighty bloody, but doesn’t strike me as especially unfair.

Well, and it’s even blurrier than that–every single main character has had sexual encounters with both sexes, so it’s basically a bunch of bisexuals or omnisexuals, some who live and some who die. You can’t say they’re just picking on the queer ones. (Which is different than BtVS where they really did kill the only important gay character, or one of the only two if you insist that Willow wasn’t bisexual.)
I suppose there’s more justification to complain that they’ve just killed off the only important gay ship, but as long as the show doesn’t suddenly turn 100% straight (um, not likely!) there should still be plenty of gay relationships too.
I have been hearing that the show is better this time around. I’ll give it a chance, but I’m waiting until
jaydk comes over, because there’s no way I’m watching the same episode of Torchwood more than once!

I love TW, you know. But the fandom is batshit and the wank over this IS going to be CRAZYPANTS.

I wouldn’t say Torchwood has the largest number of batshit people of any fandom I’ve ever seen, but I’m pretty sure it has the highest proportion of batshit to sane than I’ve seen. (No offense intended! You are an island of sane amidst a sea of lunacy.) I can exist in this fandom without even watching the show, simply by subsisting on lulz generated by the wank.

I’m very happy you’re commenting in my LJ. I have one girl there who’s ready to put on sackcloth and ashes, and then go kill RTD, and I’m just ignoring her.
Srsly tho, ppl saying “IT’S GAY HATE!” (yes, there are ppl doing this). Erm…RTD?
lol

RTD hates himself?

RTD is subconsciously reinforcing the homophobic tropes common in mainstream entertainment?
I could sort of buy that if 1) all the main characters weren’t somewhere in the middle on the Kinsey scale and 2) Jack/Ianto was the only gay ship (but it’s not–we’ve got Jack/John, Jack/unrequited!Doctor, Jack/Jack…).
Seriously, I loathe Torchwood, but the one area in which it succeeds is gender politics. The fact that it’s so good there and (IMO) so stupid everywhere else is part of why I’m so annoyed by it. There are plenty of terrible shows that don’t bother me, but this one does because it’s got this one good aspect that draws me in and makes me wish it was better.

Heh. I don’t go to ANY of the comms. Ever. I find my blood pressure appreciates it.
I hope they bring Ianto back, I do, but man, the WHACK that is going on right now is hella amusing.
