Buffy Meme

Best Characters in order
1. Spike
You mean there were characters other than Spike? Oh, all right…
2. Anya
3. Wesley (of course, it helps to know his later development on Angel)
4. Cordelia
5. Faith (waaaay better on Angel)

Best villains in order
1. Spike, duh. :P
2. Drusilla
3. Angelus
4. Darla (apparently everyone was better on Angel except Spike :P)
5. Vamp!Willow

Best pairings in order (not necessarily romantic)
1. Spike/Angel
2. Spike/Xander
3. Spike/Drusilla
4. Spike & Dawn
5. Spike/Anya
(I MAKE NO APOLOGIES.)

Best Episodes (10)
* Intervention
* Fool for Love
* Afterlife
* Crush
* The Gift
* Dopplegangland
* Becoming Part II
* Lie to Me
* Once More, with Feeling
* Lovers Walk
(I wanted to put “Dead Things” on there, because it’s powerful and brilliantly written, but, in retrospect, the alley scene–and the show’s complete failure to deal appropriately with it–is what killed my love of the show. *sigh*)

Season ranking
5, 2, 3, 4, 1, 6, 7

(3 and 4 kind of tie, since 4 has more Spike, but 3 is better in every other way.)

It’s been so long that I can barely remember most of this stuff. Let’s try something more recent.

New Doctor Who Version

Best Characters in order
1. The Tenth Doctor
2. The Master
3. Rose
4. Donna
5. Wilf

Best villains in order
1. The Master
2. Whateverthefuck it was possessing Sky in “Midnight.”
3. Does Dalek Caan count as a villain? Because he was adorable and awesome.
4. I hate Steven Moffat, but, oh, all right, the weeping angels
5. and the clockwork men.

Best pairings in order (not necessarily romantic)
1. Doctor/Master
2. Doctor/Rose
3. Doctor & Donna
4. Doctor/Jack, but only in the fucked-up way (Jack obsessed with an illusion and the Doctor settling because he can’t have the Master)
5. Doctor/Reinette (yeah, that episode was poorly timed, but they were hot together)

Best Episodes (10 15, because I’m still too obsessed with this show to narrow it down)
* Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords (majorly flawed, yes, but they gave us phone sex and the Master dying in the Doctor’s arms, so I will love them forever)
* Doomsday
* Midnight
* Utopia
* Human Nature/Family of Blood
* Turn Left
* The Runaway Bride
* The Shakespeare Code
* Dalek
* The Girl in the Fireplace
* Tooth & Claw
* Gridlock
* Fires of Pompeii
* School Reunion
* The Unicorn and the Wasp (mostly for the brilliance of the poisoning scene)

Season ranking
2, 3, 4, 1 (but close on all counts)

    OH SPIKE/DAWN. I still secretly wish the canon went there. It would have been really terribly fucked up.

    *Is one of the few people who thought Faith waaaaay more interesting on Buffy*

    I also wanted to put Lovers Walk on it, but I had to narrow it down to only ten. I should have made it fifteen omg.

    I’m not sure why I didn’t find the angels in Blink scary. It’s not my bias to Moffat cos I didn’t even know he wrote that one when I first watched it.

    I didn’t really ship Spike/Dawn, but, man, I loved their friendship so much. It broke my heart when the show just totally abandoned it and pretended it never happened. :( (I totally loved when the outcasts from the inner Scoobie circle would band together. And those two were just so adorable: Dawn’s innocent desire to rebel, Spike’s attempts to seem evil and scary despite his genuine fondness for her, both of them feeling so out of place in the world.)

    I’m of two minds about Faith. I wanted to love her, but I always felt like the show was making a value judgment in comparing her negatively to Buffy. And as a dark haired goth teenager at the time, I got really fucking sick of seeing her always coming in second best to the glowing blonde cheerleader. And then when she turned evil it was like, ugh, all my worst expectations confirmed; god forbid you show an angry goth chick on TV without her turning out to be “bad.” (I realize in retrospect that it’s a lot more complex than that, but part of it is the black and white moral simplicity of the Buffyverse that continually bothers me.)

    But I liked aspects of her, and then I adored her utterly on Angel. Angel was the show where she could actually be her three-dimensional, morally ambiguous self in all her glory.

    “Blink” really genuinely scared me. “The Empty Child”/”The Doctor Dances” didn’t, and the clockwork men didn’t (I just thought they looked cool, and the ship made out of human body parts was eerie) but “Blink,” man, I don’t want to watch that episode by myself!

    Well if I want to go for well-adjusted and sweet, Dawn and Spike being friends is a good thing. But I wanted them to start having sex post The Gift and it would fucked up and wrong and hot.

    Well, for me in Angel, she was a whole lot less interesting because she pretty much went all forward there (not that I’m knocking that story-line because I think it fit). I like that she took many steps forwards and backwards in season three and her breakdown and betrayal in season three is some of my favorite TV ever. And I adored her in season seven.

    Faith mirroring Buffy, though, is my favorite aspect of her character. So that really influences my views on her character.

    TEC/TDD scared me the first time and didn’t the second. Mostly I find I’m not big on Moffat’s writing.

    I think that’s one of those situations where I just can’t separate the actors from the characters. 40-something James Marsters corrupting teenage Michelle Trachtenberg = major, major squick. (I’m not judging… I’m all for other people being into the ship, I just personally can’t get into it.)

    I guess I liked that Faith and Angel could relate to each other and connect because their redemption storylines were similar. Angel didn’t judge her because he understood. Buffy never seemed to get past that sense of self-righteous judgment. (And I don’t think she really saw Faith as a person, she just saw her own dark side and hated Faith the way she hated that part of herself. Typical Buffy egomania. :P)

    Did Faith just go forward on Angel? I remember torturing Wesley being the most upsetting thing she did (to me, since I loved Wesley) but I guess that was the start of her arc… nowhere to go but up. ;)

    Oh if we’re talking canon – no. I probably wouldn’t want them to go there. But not that I would have hated it if it did.

    I actually kind of disagree that Faith and Angel had similar types of redemption. Angel’s problem is that he’s fundamentally flawed and still gets off on killing people. Faith, on the other hand, hates that she accidentally killed someone so did her level best to hurt the person she cared about the most who also was the first person to give her a chance (Buffy) so she tries to get Angel to kill her. Angel got where she was coming from and that was a key towards her redemption, but they’re in very different places emotionally. I think she just needed someone whose been in a worse place than her to tell her she could go forward and still be a good person, despite the blood on her hands.

    In season four, when she comes back, she goes up up up. Wesley’s all crazy and torturing people for info and she’d like WTF mate. Mostly because I think that Faith is fundamentally a decent person, while Wesley is deeply flawed and crazy.

    as for re: Buffy not seeing Faith as a person… Gotta disagree. She resented Faith some at first for clicking with her friends when she was feeling so on outs and hating herself for dare running away after killing Angel. But soon enough, Faith and Buffy are friends. They two of them understand each other in ways no one else can. And when Faith accidentally kills someone, Buffy was on her side and pushing to help her. It wasn’t until Faith directly betrayed them by siding with the mayor and harming Angel that Buffy decided to kill her.

    And then steals her body and rapes her boyfriend so I can’t help but take her side in season one of Angel. Even more so since she didn’t see Faith’s breakdown. And even on the roof, Faith was getting to her and Buffy looked inclined to help her before the Watchers Council attempts to kill them both.

    Yeah, that’s all I meant, not that they were exactly the same.

    Buffy not seeing Faith as a person… Gotta disagree.

    It’s funny how people can watch the same thing and come out with completely different interpretations. Admittedly I’m always going to see Buffy’s actions with the worst possible interpretation, because I hate her as much as it’s possible to hate a fictional character. *shrugs*

    I’m glad you get something more positive out of the story than I do. :)

    Ah okay.

    I HEART BUFFY. It’s one of the few TV shows I can watch for hours on end. I tend to hate TV in general so that says a lot. I wish it had continued to work for you.

    I’m going to have to do this!

    Isn’t it amazing how everyone but Spike was better on Angel? I never would have thought that Wesley would be a favorite character just from how he was on Buffy, but on Angel I adore him.

    Wesley turned out to be my favorite character on Angel, and my second-favorite out of the entire Buffyverse. Who could have imagined that, based on his initial appearances? :)
