Good Friends + Good Music = Perfect Evening
Tonight I got to see one of my favorite bands with two of my favorite people in the universe.
chenanceou and
jaydk met up with me at Pukk, the yummy vegetarian Thai restaurant. Then we headed to The Living Room to see Common Rotation.
It was a good show, although way too short. The band members were in good moods; the stage banter was adorable and the songs were all entertaining. But it felt incomplete, because they didn’t play a single one of the staples I’ve gotten used to at Common Rotation shows; no “Everything Under the Sun” or “Gone Dyin’” or “Clear Channel” or “Party People” or “Indie Rockin.” Just, good, but I wanted another hour. Remember those living room shows, when they’d play and play? I got so spoiled back then…
I made
chenanceou get their autographs afterward, because, dude, she’d come halfway across the world and timed her trip to see them. She was all adorable and shy. And of course the band was nice, as they always are. Adam Busch is the nicest “celebrity” I met in the entirety of Buffy fandom.
Amber Benson was there, and it always freaks me out to see her, because she is tiny. Like, ethereal. And when you remember that people complained about her being “fat” when she was on BtVS, you realize that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan must be, like, doll-sized, to look small next to her. It also made me feel like some kind of hulking giant. But anyway. She is also nice.
And tomorrow I’m going to Asbury Park. I’m going to lay on the beach and breathe salty air and read something light (maybe Harry Potter) and just be glad to be out of NYC. I can’t believe I haven’t gone anywhere in eight months. I’m not made to stay in one place for so long!
(Is it really annoying to choose three mood icons? I can’t decide if I’m more drunk, tired, or happy.)
Current Mood:
drunk &
happy &
tired

Amber Benson is fat? PEOPLE ARE CRAZY. Then again, by season four, I wanted someone to hold Buffy down and force fed her. TOO SKINNY.
Glad you had fun <3

Thanks. :)
It always weirded me out how Joss got all this feminist street cred for casting a “less traditional” actress to play Tara. I mean… what??!! She’s both tiny and drop-dead gorgeous; the only reason she seems “larger than average” is that Joss cast tiny little stick people in all the other female roles!

Yes, Tara looked frumpy at first, because you know, she’d been abused. But when she started to gain confidence - girl was HOT.

Of all the women in BtVS, she’s the hottest.
Well, and maybe Drusilla. Not Juliet Landau, but Drusilla had that freaky-lunatic doll-obsessed damaged-yet-way-powerful-and-evil thing…

Dunno if I’d say she’s the hottest, because it does boil down to taste. But she was hardly hard on the eyes.

Well yeah. Obviously it’s all a matter of opinion. :)

One of the girls I worked with this weekend does bit acting and we talked about the size thing. She’s slenderish, Asian build and very normal looking. She says they won’t cast anyone who is smaller than the lead girl, because they don’t want anyone to look better than her on the show. I can’t even begin to imagine how like pixies with toothpick arms SMG and AH must look next to Amber IRL. Even Emma Caulfield, who was totally too skinny looked a fair bit bigger than SMG. Yuck.

I hate that everything came down at the same time and I had to choose (your party, DW season ep, CR and Polaris) - but I guess the good thing is that if I have to miss a show, at least it was a short show. We get spoiled at Passim because they play a good hour there, as well.
And, instead of getting hugs from Adam, Amber and Jordan, I get hugs from strange, babbling, dorky people signing up for a reaper contest whilst working at the Info desk.
Have a good, relaxing mini-break!

Yeah, how was Passim?? I miss those nice long shows! How was the setlist–you didn’t think they left a lot out?
Who hugged you at the info desk? Passim people who recognized you, or just random strangers?
I actually didn’t talk to Amber (what would I have to say to her?) but she was really nice when Chen asked her where the bathroom was. ;)
We waited a long time to talk to the band, so they were all in a hurry to leave and didn’t talk much. (But of course Adam’s always nice and gives hugs anyway.) Normally I’d just leave, but we had to get them to quickly sign Chen’s CD, since she’d come halfway around the world and everything. ;)

There may exist confuddledness in your reply. They didn’t play Passim this go around; I refer to prior shows. Unless you are actually referring to the gig back in March, to which I already gave feedback in an email (that I don’t think you replied to?).
So! A strange, random person at the info desk at the con–which I left for on Thursday early and got back Monday late…no other activities in between. She was babbling about things and I was trying to hang up informational fliers on boards, and she suddenly hugged me from the side; it was so bizarre!! Working places like registration and info desk *totally* leave you open to random, bored people who want to talk. and talk. and talk.
I usually end up being able to chat sort of easily to Amber despite my inability for small talk and other social anxiety crap simply because we hung out a bit on that mortifying cruise a couple years back (she made fun of me for reading every time she saw me - which I was doing before a gig in Boston, as well, lol), followed by ComicCon then other places since then, so it kind of comes easier; in March we were talking about the tour in Alaska and the filming she’d been doing there, school (Erin was with me), other venues (including the Living Room) etc.
You know, I think they were playing LA the next night after your show; wouldn’t surprise me if they were leaving red eye or super early the next day.
I was thinking about going to Quebec for Bella Morte until I realized it won’t be a full show, either. *sigh*
I sent you a picture I took of a model/sculpture on Saturday, but I’m not sure it got sent properly…Did you get it?

Oh okay. Wait, where were you text-messaging me from? I think I assumed you were at a show when you were actually at… was it Polaris? I sometimes get text messages days late which makes it extra confusing.
Yeah, they were playing LA the next day. No wonder they were tired and wanted to leave so quickly!
No, I didn’t get the picture. My phone really isn’t very cut out for text/photo messaging. :(

The texts were from the con. I got home from NY on Sunday and left for Toronto on Thursday - I know, it seems like weeks ago! You mean my *gossip* texts, right?
I accidentally sent a pic to your phone, then tried your new email addy, which I might have messed up since I did it from memory. So, I’ll send it again, because it totally made me laugh.
I came thisclose to buying a sonic screwdriver flashlight…

LOL. Yes. The ~~gossip~~ texts. Which had me laughing my ass off, BTW. Send me an email with all the dirty details written out so that I can laugh more!
Ooh, I want a Sonic Screwdriver! Did I tell you Chen got me a TARDIS? (And apologized that it had Martha in the picture on the back!)

I almost bought you one! They had a couple of types; one is a flashlight. You could also get a Tardis USB hub or a Tardis bank that made noise, or a Tardis cast iron model. I got to see the Tardis Chen got you!
We have to hit the dealers room at D*C. They had minis of the Tardis and Daleks, too.
Not too much more in detail, but there was one thing that I didn’t type out on a text. Remember, you asked for it…

Hey - elsaf.livejournal.com has an extra ticket for Love’s Labour’s Lost with Tennant on Oct. 17! She needs someone to buy it, so I thought I’d mention it here. Don’t know if it dovetails with your trip, but…
You lucky things! So, so jealous.
