I can never unwatch this. :(
Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with America? Bet you a million dollars they change the ending to make it more palatable to delicate American sensibilities. Just… keep reminding me that it’s going to inspire more people to seek out the real version. (*clutches John Simm*)
Some cheery things to scrub this travesty from my mind:
*
versaphile wrote Subterranean, a beautiful coda which made me feel somewhat better about the most recent Doctor Who episode. (She’s also posting a new chapter of the amazing Praxis every week, which just gets better and better.)
*
violet_lane wrote absolutely wonderful meta about Rose Tyler. She pretty much gets to the heart of what I love about Rose: that she’s the rare female character who undergoes a true hero’s journey, and that her heroism is due to her own choices, not any kind of special destiny. (And that she lives her life fully: she’s impulsive, adventurous, strong-willed, makes her own decisions, has fun, and sees the beauty of the universe along with the monsters.) It’s a long post, but completely worth the read.
* There are a hell of a lot of awesome Doctor/Master porn writers out there; I’m impressed by the quality of most of the responses at the
best_enemies anon porn meme.
* Look how adorable young Stephen Colbert is! (Not that he isn’t still adorable now.)

WHY IS THERE A REMAKE OF LIFE ON MARS WITH MUSIC AND ACTING LIKE THAT. I haven’t even watched it yet, but I feel dirty.

IT IS WRONG IN EVERY WAY THAT A THING CAN BE WRONG.
Okay, honestly, I’m probably going to enjoy getting drunk and mocking it relentlessly, but then I’m going to have to mainline the entire sixteen episode original series immediately afterward in order to clean the taint out of my brain.

I knew that thing was coming, and was curious how they were going to screw it up (I mean adapt it). Colm Meany as Gene? Well, better casting than that lead guy who doesn’t seem to have a 10th of Simms’ charisma.
I wouldn’t worry about the end. I doubt it will make it that far, but since it’s American, if it does well Sam’s going to be stuck in the seventies for years (no end in sight).

Yeah, I’m actually pretty okay with Colm Meany. Although I think he’s a little too endearing for Gene. But I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.
Sam, though? Just, oh my god, no.

THAT TRAILER MADE MY BRAIN THROW UP.
WHY GOD WHY
Seriously, the shitty wocka-chicka music and the terrible fonts and the unspeakable voiceover. And what’s with the big white-haired guy cracking jokes in every scene ? (OH GOD IS THAT THEIR RAY ?) And why is the Annie character in the morgue with them ? AND WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE HE’S KILLED SAM TYLER AND IS WEARING HIM ? (That hair, auuugh, that tiny hair on his gigantic head ! He is so much larger than Simm, the hair looks terrible.)
Also, his earnest “American television cop” voice is killing me.
I can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve watched it four times and every time I crack up halfway through.

OMG. That’s the best description of it that I’ve heard yet. He’s buff!Slitheen!Sam. (Eeeewwwwwwww.)
Just… the whole point is that Sam is vulnerable! And uptight and earnest, yes, but also snarky and rude and deeply screwed up and pretty much in the process of having a mental breakdown throughout the entire series. HE IS NOT A GENERIC AMERICAN TOUGH GUY COP.
And… how are we ever supposed to take Gene’s mockery and dominant behavior seriously when Sam is TWICE HIS SIZE? Gah, it’s like they missed the point of everything and are just making a stupid comedy.

I won’t take that bet. Even if they had cast better actors, I’m just wondering how the show is going to work in an open-ended American format. I doubt ABC is looking for a one season or even two season show. And did Colm Meany have an American accent in that promo? It sounded like to me and that’s just wrong.

I think chances are it’ll either get canceled after three episodes, or it’ll end up meandering for a few seasons and eventually become unrecognizable to the UK version. (Think Queer as Folk US versus UK–they became completely different shows and had nearly opposite endings.)
I don’t want to spoil the ending of LOM UK in case anyone reading this hasn’t seen it. But I thought it was revolutionary and subverted a lot of TV/film cliches. Given how generic and lame the US version looks, if it lasts long enough for them to write an actual ending, I’m expecting something far more didactic and typical (”Sam wakes up and leads a happier life utilizing what he learned in the past to benefit his life in the present.”)
